✈️ Mad Dog Global International Operations Series - The NAT Track Message: Make Sure You Have the Current Picture The North Atlantic Organized Track System can change every day as routes are designed around winds, traffic demand, weather and operational considerations. That makes one item particularly important during oceanic flight planning: The current NAT Track Message. ICAO NAT Doc 007’s Sample Oceanic Checklist calls for crews to have a current copy of the Track Message available for all crossings and to note the location of the nearest tracks on the plotting chart, EFB or tablet. Why does that matter? Even if you’re operating on a random route rather than directly on an organized track, understanding the surrounding track structure helps maintain the crew’s big-picture situational awareness. Before departure, crews should understand: ✓ Which Track Message is current for the crossing ✓ The applicable track structure and direction ✓ Where the planned route sits relative to nearby tracks ✓ The coordinates defining relevant tracks ✓ Any applicable remarks or restrictions contained in the message And there’s another important lesson here: Don’t assume yesterday’s information applies to today’s flight. International operations depend heavily on having the right information at the right time. An outdated document can look perfectly legitimate while presenting a picture that no longer exists. Current information → better situational awareness → another layer of error prevention. ➡️ Next in the series: Oceanic Weather Analysis — looking beyond destination weather. This series is for educational purposes. Always use current operational information and follow your operator’s approved manuals, procedures and applicable authorizations. #MadDogGlobal #InternationalOperations #OceanicOperations #NATTracks #NATHLA #FlightPlanning #SituationalAwareness #AviationSafety #BusinessAviation
