✈️ Mad Dog Global International Operations Series - Contingency Planning: Know the Plan Before You Need It Oceanic operations require crews to think beyond the flight they expect to fly. What happens if you can’t maintain your assigned altitude? What if you need to deviate for weather? What if communications are lost or an operational problem requires you to leave the cleared route? ICAO NAT Doc 007’s Sample Oceanic Checklist includes a straightforward but important item during flight planning: Review contingency procedures and plans. That review matters because an abnormal situation over the North Atlantic can quickly combine time pressure, workload, communications challenges and traffic considerations. Before entering the oceanic environment, crews should be familiar with the procedures applicable to situations such as: ✓ Weather deviations ✓ Inability to maintain assigned altitude ✓ Loss of communications ✓ Diversion from the planned route ✓ Aircraft system or performance problems ✓ Other circumstances requiring departure from the clearance The objective isn’t to memorize every possible scenario. It’s to make sure the crew knows where to find the procedure, understands the basic strategy, and has already discussed how responsibilities will be managed if something changes. This is also where good CRM becomes especially important. When an unexpected event occurs, one pilot may be flying and managing the aircraft while the other communicates, verifies the applicable procedure, evaluates diversion options and monitors the developing situation. The middle of an oceanic contingency is not the ideal time for the crew’s first discussion about what comes next. Review it before departure. Discuss it as a crew. Know where to find it. Preparation doesn’t prevent every abnormal situation but it can make the response far more deliberate when one occurs. ➡️ Next in the series: The Master Flight Plan — routing, fuel, time and groundspeed should tell a consistent story. This series is for educational purposes and is not a substitute for the applicable ICAO contingency procedures or an operator’s approved manuals, checklists and SOPs. #MadDogGlobal #InternationalOperations #OceanicOperations #ContingencyPlanning #NATHLA #CRM #FlightPlanning #AviationSafety #BusinessAviation
