CNS Codes: What Are You Telling ATC? Before an international flight ever leaves the ground, the flight plan is already telling ATC a great deal about the aircraft. The Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) codes entered in the ICAO flight plan identify the capabilities and approvals associated with the aircraft and operation. For North Atlantic operations, these entries can communicate capabilities involving: CPDLC • ADS-C • RNP • RVSM • HF • SATCOM • Data Link Why does this matter? Because an incorrect code isn’t simply a paperwork error. ATC uses flight-plan information as part of managing the aircraft within the airspace and determining the services and procedures that apply. Before filing, crews and flight planners should make sure the codes accurately reflect the aircraft’s equipment, operational status and applicable approvals. The first item on ICAO NAT Doc 007’s Sample Oceanic Checklist is a good reminder: Know what you’re filing and make sure the airplane can do what the flight plan says it can do. Next up: Your Oceanic Documentation Package; what should be available before heading across the ocean? This series is for educational purposes. Always follow your operator’s approved manuals, procedures and applicable authorizations. #MadDogGlobal #InternationalOperations #OceanicOperations #NATHLA #FlightPlanning #CPDLC #AviationSafety #BusinessAviation
