✈️ Mad Dog Global International Operations Series - Oceanic Weather Analysis: Look Beyond the Destination For an international oceanic flight, checking the weather at the departure and destination is only the beginning. ICAO NAT Doc 007’s Sample Oceanic Checklist specifically calls for a weather analysis during flight planning, including enroute temperature and turbulence information, as well as weather at diversion airports. Why is this so important? Because weather can affect much more than passenger comfort. Across the North Atlantic, it can influence: ✓ Route and altitude selection ✓ Winds and groundspeed ✓ Fuel planning ✓ Turbulence exposure ✓ Equal Time Points and diversion strategy ✓ The suitability of planned alternate/diversion airports This also connects directly with our previous discussions about ETPs and EDTO/ETOPS planning. An airport identified as a good diversion option during initial planning may become considerably less attractive if the forecast deteriorates. Likewise, stronger-than-expected winds or significant turbulence can change the operational picture as the flight progresses. The key is to think of weather as a route-wide risk assessment, not simply a destination forecast. And the analysis shouldn’t end at takeoff. As new information becomes available, crews should continue asking: Has anything changed that affects our original plan? Good international flight planning doesn’t just answer, “Can we get there?” It also considers: “What are our options if the plan changes?” ➡️ Next in the series: Contingency Planning; the worst time to learn a procedure is when you suddenly need it. This series is for educational purposes. Always use current operational weather information and follow your operator’s approved manuals, procedures and applicable authorizations. #MadDogGlobal #InternationalOperations #OceanicOperations #AviationWeather #FlightPlanning #ETOPS #EDTO #ETP #NATHLA #AviationSafety
