✈️ Mad Dog Global International Operations Series - The Master Flight Plan: Does the Entire Flight Tell the Same Story? By the time an aircraft departs on an oceanic flight, the crew has reviewed a tremendous amount of information. But one document helps tie much of that information together: the Master Flight Plan. ICAO NAT Doc 007’s Sample Oceanic Checklist specifically calls for crews during preflight to check the Master Flight Plan for: ✓ Routing ✓ Fuel ✓ Times ✓ Groundspeeds These aren’t independent pieces of information. They should support one another. If the forecast winds change, groundspeed may change. If groundspeed changes, waypoint times and fuel predictions may change. If the route changes, the entire picture may need to be reevaluated. That’s why the Master Flight Plan is more than something to simply follow from waypoint to waypoint. It can serve as an important cross-check against what the aircraft and navigation systems are actually telling you. As the flight progresses, crews should continually be asking: Does our actual position, time, groundspeed and fuel make sense compared with what we planned? A discrepancy doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong, but it should prompt the crew to understand why the numbers are different. That mindset is one of the foundations of effective oceanic monitoring. Don’t just follow the flight plan.
