✈️ EDTO/ETOPS Planning: When the Nearest Suitable Airport Is a Long Way Away Oceanic flying changes the way crews need to think about diversion planning. Over land, there may be numerous airports relatively close to the route. Over the North Atlantic, your options can be much more limited and conditions at those airports can change quickly. That’s why ICAO NAT Doc 007’s Sample Oceanic Checklist includes completing an EDTO/ETOPS analysis, when applicable, as part of flight planning. Good diversion planning goes beyond identifying airports on a map. Crews should understand: ✓ Which diversion airports support the planned route ✓ Airport weather and forecasts ✓ Runway availability and suitability ✓ Aircraft performance considerations ✓ Fuel requirements for applicable diversion scenarios ✓ Operational limitations that could affect the diversion ✓ How changing conditions could alter the plan And remember the connection to our last post on Equal Time Points (ETPs). An ETP helps identify when one diversion option may become preferable to another; but the calculation is only useful if the airports behind it remain available and operationally suitable. A diversion airport that looked good during initial planning may not look the same several hours later. That makes EDTO/ETOPS planning more than a preflight exercise. Plan the diversion. Understand the assumptions. Monitor the options.
