✈️ Equal Time Points (ETPs): More Than a Point on the Flight Plan During an oceanic crossing, there may come a time when continuing forward is no longer the best option. A medical emergency. A system malfunction. A pressurization problem. An engine issue. Deteriorating weather at a diversion airport. That’s where Equal Time Points (ETPs) become an important part of preflight planning. An ETP identifies a point along the route where the time to continue to one selected airport is equal to the time to return or proceed to another, based on the assumptions used in the calculation. ICAO NAT Doc 007’s Sample Oceanic Checklist specifically includes plotting the ETPs during flight planning. But an ETP shouldn’t simply be another symbol printed on the flight plan. Crews should understand: ✓ Where the ETPs are located ✓ Which airports are associated with them ✓ What scenario each ETP represents ✓ The weather and operational suitability of those airports ✓ How changing winds or conditions could affect the diversion picture The value of an ETP isn’t the line on the chart. It’s giving the crew useful information before a decision has to be made. When something changes hundreds of miles from land, good planning can turn a high-workload situation into a more structured decision. Know your options before you need them. ➡️ Next in the series: EDTO/ETOPS Planning — when the nearest suitable airport may be a long way away. This series is for educational purposes.
